Studying the relation between risk factors and suffering from varicosity in nurses of selected hospitals of Isfahan University of Medical Science in 2013

Background: Todays, many hygienic problems which are observed in most countries are somewhat related to changing of individuals type of living, one of these problems is venous varicosity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the health behaviors and suffering the nurses from varicosity.

Materials and methods: In this case - control study, 200 nurses from selected hospitals of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences were selected into two groups of case and control. They were examined by a general surgeon, and then relevant questionnaire were accomplished on the basis of CEAP criterion. Data were analyzed using independent t test, Chi- square, Mann - Whitney U and logistic regression. P<0.05 was considered significant.

Results: Off 200 nurses, 93% of the case group and 82% of the control group were women. According to severity of varicosity, 80% were in telanglectasia stage. There was a significant relation between the nurses’ varicose and gender (p=0.02), height (p=0.04), Cesarean delivery (p=0.03), family history (p<0.0001), daily consumption of vegetables (p=0.004), and daily consumption of less than 3 glasses of water (p=0.01). 

Conclusion: Regarding increasing number of nurses with foot varicosity, and the effects of risk factors on creating the varicosity intensity, and also for decreasing inefficiency, spending the treatment expenses circumstances and prevention, it seem that programming is necessary.
